Cấu trúc Not Only But Also trong tiếng Anh

Khi các bạn muốn khen một ai đó vừa đẹp lại vừa học giỏi, các bạn có thể sử dụng Cấu trúc Not Only But Also trong tiếng Anh. Mẫu câu này được sử dụng rất nhiều trong đời sống hằng ngày với nhiều mục đích khác nhau.

1. Định nghĩa cấu trúc Not Only But Also

Cấu trúc Not Only But Also là 1 dạng cấu trúc ngữ pháp tiếng Anh được sử dụng khá phổ biến. Cấu trúc này mang ý nghĩa là: “Không những …. mà còn ….”.

Cấu trúc này được sử dụng nhằm nhấn mạnh về đặc tính, hành động của một sự vật, sự việc nào đó. Cấu trúc not only… but also còn được sử dụng để nối đồng thời nhấn mạnh 2 từ hay cụm từ có cùng vị trí, tính chất.

2. Cấu trúc và cách sử dụng Not Only…. But Also

Trong ngữ pháp tiếng Anh, cấu trúc Not Only But Also có 3 dạng: 

2.1. Nhấn mạnh Danh từ

S + V + not only + Noun + but also + Noun 

Ví dụ minh hoạ:

Not only my brother but also I do not like to exercise 

(Không chỉ anh trai tôi mà cả tôi đều không thích tập thể dục )

2.2. Nhấn mạnh động từ

S + not only + V + but also + V

Ví dụ minh hoạ: 

Jimmy not only sing well but also dance perfectly.

(Jimmy không những hát hay mà còn đàn giỏi nữa.)

2.3. Nhấn mạnh trạng từ

S + V + not only + Adv + but also + Adv

Ví dụ minh hoạ: 

Thach works not only quickly but also efficiently.

(Thạch không chỉ làm việc nhanh mà còn hiệu quả nữa.)

3. Cấu trúc đảo ngữ với Not Only But Also

Không chỉ có 3 dạng chính như trên, cấu trúc Not Only But Also sẽ được dùng trong câu đảo ngữ:

Not only + Trợ động từ/ Modal verb + S + V but also …

Not only + động từ tobe + S… but also …

Lưu ý: Trong mẫu câu Not only…but also, chúng ta có thể để nguyên “but also”, nhưng cũng có thể bỏ đi “also” hay tách “also” khỏi “but” nhé!

Ví dụ minh hoạ:

I like Marvel. My friend likes Marvel

= Not only I but my friend also likes Marvel.

= Not only I but my friend likes Marvel.

3.1. Đảo ngữ với động từ khuyết thiếu

Với câu có động từ khiếm khuyết (modal verb) như là: can, could, may, might,….thì việc các bạn cần làm là đảo modal verb lên trước chủ ngữ; đồng thời giữ nguyên vế thứ hai đằng sau dấu phẩy (,) sẽ tạo nên một câu có cấu trúc not only ở đầu câu.

Ví dụ minh hoạ:

Increasing cost of fuel can not only save fuel, it also protects environment.

→ Not only can increasing cost of fuel save fuel, it also protects environment.

3.2. Đảo ngữ với động từ “tobe”

Trong tình huống câu cần đảo của các bạn có chứa động từ “to be”, bạn chỉ cần đưa động từ “to be” lên trước danh từ. Cùng với đó là giữ nguyên vế thứ 2 (về sau dấu phẩy), vậy là các bạn đã có ngay 1 câu đảo ngữ hoàn chỉnh rồi.

Ví dụ minh hoạ: 

Video games are not only costly, they are also harmful to your health.

→ Not only are video games costly, they are also harmful to your health. = Not only are video games costly but also harmful to your health.

3.3. Đảo ngữ với động từ thường

Đưa lên trước chủ ngữ các trợ động từ thích hợp như: does, do, did, …, đảo chủ ngữ về sau và giữ nguyên vế sau.

Ví dụ minh hoạ: 

Smoking doesn’t only harm your own health, it also threatens others.

→ Not only does smoking harm your own health, it also threatens others.

4. Những lưu ý khi sử dụng cấu trúc Not Only But Also

Dưới đây là những lỗi sai thường gặp khi các bạn sử dụng cấu trúc Not Only But Also

Ví dụ 1: He’s not only handsome, but also a singer

Trong trường hợp này, “handsome” chính là tính từ, “singer” chính là danh từ và chúng không tương đồng nhau nên đây là 1 câu sử dụng sai.

Ví dụ 2: She ate not only the steak but also the soda.

Đọc có vẻ hơi vô lý phải không, vâng không ai ăn Soda bao giờ cả, chỉ uống soda mà thôi.

Sửa thành: She not only ate the steak, but also drank the soda.

5. Một số cấu trúc đồng nghĩa với cấu trúc Not Only But Also

Không hoàn toàn mang nghĩa không những…mà còn nhưng cần lưu ý đến một số cấu trúc đồng nghĩa với Not Only…. But Also bên dưới:

5.1. As well as (vừa … vừa …)

Tương tự với cấu trúc trên, các thành phần đằng trước đồng thời đằng sau cụm từ này phải tương đương với nhau.

S + V + N/adj/adv + as well as + N/adj/adv Hoặc: S + V + as well as + V

Ví dụ minh hoạ:

• Mickey is talented as well as handsome.
• He writes correctly as well as neatly.
• She plays the guitar as well as the violin.
• John plays the piano as well as composes music.

5.2. Both …..and… (vừa … vừa)

Công thức này giống hệt với “not only … but also”. “Both” chỉ được sử dụng với “and”, không được dùng với “as well as”

Ví dụ minh hoạ:

• Paul is both talented and handsome.
• Marry both plays the piano and composes music.

6. Ứng dụng cấu trúc Not Only But Also vào IELTS Writing

Trong IELTS Writing, cấu trúc này sẽ giúp các bạn giải thích hiệu quả quan điểm của bản thân, vì bạn đã cùng đưa ra 2 dẫn chứng chỉ trong 1 câu.

Cụ thể hơn, cấu trúc Not Only But Also rất dễ sử dụng để viết mở đầu phần Kết luận khi trả lời dạng câu hỏi “Do you agree or disagree?” trong bài thi IELTS Writing Task 2, với mục đích tóm tắt lại các ý chính đã viết trong những đoạn Thân bài trước khi nhắc lại quan điểm của mình.

Tuy nhiên, để việc giải thích câu hỏi trở nên hiệu quả hơn, các bạn nên sử dụng cấu trúc NOT ONLY BUT ALSO đảo ngữ thay vì cấu trúc cơ bản.

7. Một số lỗi sai thường gặp

• Sau “not only” và “but also” phải sử dụng cùng một loại từ
• Động từ sử dụng phía trước “not only” phải phù hợp với cả hai từ dùng sau đó
