1. Cấu trúc would rather với một chủ ngữ 

1.1. Cấu trúc would rather ở hiện tại hoặc tương lai 

Cấu trúc would rather có thể được sử dụng nhằm diễn tả mong muốn của người nói về một điều gì đó ở thời điểm hiện tại hoặc tương lai. Cách dùng would rather này thường được sử dụng nhiều trong những tình huống giao tiếp tiếng Anh trang trọng hoặc văn viết.

Công thức

Khẳng định: S + would rather (‘d rather) + V

Phủ định:  S + would rather (‘d rather) + not + V

Nghi vấn: Would + S + rather + V

• Bill’d rather spend time on the beach.
• I’d rather not answer that question.

1.2. Cấu trúc would rather ở thì quá khứ

Cấu trúc ‘would rather’ còn được sử dụng để diễn tả mong muốn, nuối tiếc của người nói về một điều gì đó đã xảy ra ở quá khứ.

Công thức

Khẳng định (+): S + would rather + have + V3

Phủ định (-): S + would rather (not) + have + V3

Nghi vấn (?): Would + S + rather + have + V3

1.3. Cấu trúc ‘would rather than’ và ‘would rather or’ 

Để thể hiện sự ưu tiên, yêu thích một việc gì đó hơn một việc khác, chúng ta có thể sử dụng would rather than và would rather or. Đây cũng là cách dùng phổ biến của cấu trúc would rather.

Ví dụ minh hoạ:

• Would you rather eat dinner out than cook dinner tonight?
• She would rather haven’t eat that chocolate cake. 
• Would you rather eat here or go out?
• Would you rather study or watch TV?

2. Cấu trúc would rather với 2 chủ ngữ 

2.1. Cấu trúc would rather ở hiện tại hoặc tương lai 

Cấu trúc ‘would rather’ có thể được sử dụng để giả định điều gì đó đối lập với hiện tại hoặc mong muốn ai đó làm gì ở hiện tại hoặc tương lai.

Công thức

Khẳng định (+): S1 + would rather (that) + S2 + V-ed

Phủ định (-): S1 + would rather (that) + S2 + not + V-ed

Nghi vấn (?): Would + S + rather +  S2 + V-ed

• Tom would rather Mary bought an SUV.

2.2. Cấu trúc would rather ở quá khứ 

Cấu trúc would rather cũng được sử dụng để thể hiện sự mong muốn, nuối tiếc về một điều gì đó trong quá khứ hoặc giả định điều đối lập với quá khứ. Cách dùng này cũng tương đương với cách cấu trúc câu điều kiện loại III.

Công thức

Khẳng định (+): S1 + would rather (that) + S2+ had + V3

Phủ định (-): S1 + would rather (that) + S2+ hadn’t + V3

Nghi vấn (?): Would + S + rather +  S2 + had + V3

Ví dụ

• I’d rather you hadn’t rung me at work. 
• Linda would rather that she hadn’t divorced her husband.
• The teacher would rather that I had gone to class yesterday.

3. Các dạng viết tắt của would rather

Thông thường, would rather sẽ được viết tắt (ngoại trừ một số trường hợp trang trọng).

4. Phân biệt “Would rather” và “Prefer”

Về cách sử dụng thì would rather và prefer đều được dùng nhằm thể hiện mong muốn và sở thích của bản thân. Tuy nhiên, đối với cấu trúc ngữ pháp, 2 cụm từ này sẽ có một số đặc điểm khác nhau. Cụ thể tham khảo bên dưới:

S + would rather + V (nguyên thể) …. than…

S + prefer + V (ing) …. to…

Ví dụ: 

He’d rather walk than drive = He prefers walking to driving. 

(Anh ấy thích đi bộ hơn là lái xe.)
